West Brom youngster could be first to follow Appleton

Reports have suggested this week that new Pompey boss Michael Appleton is looking to add to his ranks, and is set to raid his old club West Brom for a few emergency loan additions.

As the rumour mill continues to turn and names such as Roman Bednar and Marc-Antoine Fortune are linked with the emergency loan deals, we’re hearing that the first addition could be 18-year-old attacking midfielder George Thorne.

The youngster has been dubbed as a great young talent but requiring more first team experience in a lower league, and if rumours are to be believed, the two clubs look close to agreeing a deal that would see Thorne join Pompey on an emergency-loan before the window closes this week.

Thorne joined the West Brom academy in 2004 before signing a professional contract in January 2010.

He became Albion’s youngest league debutant in 49 years when he came on as an 88th-minute substitute in the Baggies’ 4-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday in 2009.

The 6ft2 midfielder has also represented England at under-16 level, right up until his present appearances with the under-19s.

Thorne has only made one league appearance from the bench this season and also started two Carling Cup fixtures, so with Appleton looking to bring someone in before Saturday’s game against Leicester City, the young West Brom midfielder could be the Thorne in Leicester’s side!
