Pompey Away Day Guide: Stamford Bridge (Chelsea)

Pompey travel to Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon to face Premier League outfit Chelsea in the third round of the FA Cup. We haven’t traveled to Chelsea for a couple of seasons now, but here’s a guide to Stamford Bridge.

Pre-match warm-up

If you’re looking for a pre-match pint, then there seems to be a bit of choice but not too much surrounding the ground. Despite being little to no rivalry between Portsmouth and Chelsea, fans are advised to keep clear of the Sofa Bar opposite the ground and as well as The Imprerial and One which are located on Kings Road as they are home fans only.

Recommended for away fans is The Goose on the North End Road, however most away fans tend to gather at either The Broudons or The Slug and Lettuce outside Fulham Broadway, only a few minutes from the ground and just round the corner from the underground

Travel

If you are travelling by train, West Brompton over ground station is about 15 minutes walk from the stadium. Turn right outside the station, then right again into Brompton Cemetery. Walk through the cemetery and Stamford Bridge will appear on the right.

The local tube station is Fulham Broadway which is on the District Line. You can either get on a tube bound for Wimbledon or change at Earls Court on the District Line if necessary.

As you’d expect, parking around Stamford Bridge is very limited and the surrounding roads are all ‘residents only’ parking. However, with the game being on a Sunday, if you’ve drive to about one mile outside of the ground you should find side street parking. Alternatively there are a few ‘football parking’ signs around which offer spaces for about £6.

Half-time Refreshments

A range of pies and pasties are on offer as standard, including a good ol’ Chicken Balti Pie for £3, and Roll-Over Hot Dogs for £3.50. Alcohol is available on most occasions but it has been known for Stamford Bridge to deny away fans alcohol and to close off all the taps, so be aware. But if they are open, they’ll be serving Heineken and Guinness for about £3.50 a pint. Standard meal deals are available for about £6 – pie and pint etc.

Programmes

Official match day programmes are sold at £3 each, and for those looking for an insight into the minds of their opponents, the ‘Chelsea Independent’ Fanzine will be available for just £1.50, and the ‘CFCUK’ fanzine for £1.

Your Home For The Next Ninety Minutes

The 3,000 travelling Pompey fans will be housed in the Shed End Stand Upper Tier where up to 6,000 seats are usually available. There is only a small divide between the home and away fans which is bound to cause a bit of abuse between the two sets of fans. Watch out for the steps leading to your seat though as they’re small and steep.

Match-day stewards and local police are pretty relaxed compared to some recently experienced.

Tickets

Tickets have now sold-out for Pompey fans and the full taken allocation of 3,000 will be heading up to Stamford Bridge. For those desperate to see the game, there may be the odd one available in the Chelsea end but it appears all sold-out.

Finally…

Safe travelling to all fans heading up to Chelsea, and let’s head in to the fourth-round or at least bring them back to Fratton Park!
