THE RUMOUR MILL: Gabor Gyepes on trial with Pompey

It appeared last night, ahead of Pompey’s win over Birmingham City, that a mystery man was warming up with the Pompey squad, prompting fans around Fratton Park to try and identify the mystery player.

To be honest, trying to find out who someone is that you don’t recognise isn’t as easy as we thought, but the mystery player has now been identified as former Cardiff and Wolves defender Gabor Gyepes.

Gyepes had his contract terminated by Cardiff City at the end of January, making the Hungarian a free agent. The 30-year-old defender had played 74 times for Cardiff after joining from Northampton Town, but had only featured during two matches all season – both of those were in the early rounds of the Carling Cup back in August!

The defender, who will join fellow countryman Marko Futacs at the club, has only featured once against Pompey during Cardiff’s 2-0 win at Fratton Park back in August 2010, but he did look good then.

Gyepes was recently on a short-term trial at Preston North End but didn’t impress enough to earn a contract, so it baffles me really, why a club in financial difficulties would want a player that has been deemed not good enough for a League One club.

Even so, Appleton confirmed to The News last night that Gyepes was indeed on trial at the club. We’ll have to wait and see if anything comes from it, but will this prompt one of the remaining defenders to leave the club? Keep posted for more Pompey fans!

  1. “Outpaced by Parkin when we played Cardiff a few seasons back – NO THANKS!

That incident was the first to come to my mind when I read this thread. He can only have got slower so would probably be outpaced by the kitman now.

There was a write up in one of the Welsh gits papers (I think) that described Gypes as looking like he was wading through a vat of treacle as Parkin breezed past him.”

“gyepes had two cruciate ligament injuries in his career (both knees were badly damaged). he will be 31 this summer and his career is over by now: he is slow, has limited technical skills and had a bad influence on his teammates in cardiff by criticizing the club and the coaching staff in the media.”

Just found these comments on a pne forum. sounds promising. if he joins pompey, at least there’ll be no doubt in which league we’re gonna play next season…
