Leeds United striker Billy Paynter has been linked with a surprise move to Fratton Park.
The Yorkshire Post and The News are reporting that the Liverpool-born striker could opt for a move to Pompey as he looks for a move away from Leeds.
Paynter, who was transfer-listed by manager Neil Warnock earlier this month, suffered with a number of injuries at Elland Road before being sent out on a three-month loan-deal at Brighton & Hove Albion between the end of October and January – but failed to score in just ten appearances for the Seaweed.
The 27-year-old made a name for himself as a goalscorer in his time at Swindon Town, where he scored 51 goals in 133 appearances.
Paynter has also enjoyed spells with Bradford, Hull and Southend, after starting his career at Port Vale in 2000 and going on to make 153 appearances for the Valiants – scoring 33 goals.
Now it is up to Michael Appleton to try and convince Leeds and Warnock to release Paynter, who has a year still left to run on his three-year contract. With Pompey struggling for any funds and currently under a transfer embargo due to administration, Appleton will need to agree a gentleman’s agreement with Paynter before being able to actually offer a contract if a takeover of the club is successful during the summer.
Personally I think this could be a great move for Pompey if Appleton can pull this one out of the bag. Paynter is a great striker and a proven goalscorer at League One level – let’s hope we can make something out of this rumour!
