According to reports in Slovenia, Pompey are poised to sign Slovenian goalkeeper Darjan Curanovic.
It was Sky Sports who brought the story to the attention of Pompey fans after it originally broke on Slovenian site Ekipa, but it appears Pompey could be close to signing a relatively unknown goalkeeper.
The 26-year-old stopper made just five appearances for Slovenian outfit NK Triglav Kranj this season, keeping two clean sheets – and letting in eight goals in one match against the top Slovenian side, Maribor (later crowned Champions).
We’ve been checking out some top saves from Curanovic on this YouTube clip (below) and he looks pretty nifty, but for a goalkeeper who is relatively unknown, it is a big gamble for Michael Appleton and Pompey, especially after releasing the highly rated Jamie Ashdown.
Curanovic revealed the move to Ekiba when he said: “My dreams came true. I’m heading to England on 14th July and two days later I will travel with my new team-mates to Spain.”
The 6ft 2in stopper went on to say: “I just can’t hide my happiness.”
Pompey still remain without a goalkeeper after Ashdown and Matthew Gledhill were released at the end of the season, whilst Stephen Henderson was sold to West Ham. Pompey were looking to snap up Australian goalkeeper Daniel Nizic after spending most of the season on trial at Pompey, but he looks set to join Championship side Burnley.
It was rumoured last week that the Blues were also chasing a young Premier League stopper, thought to be West Bromwich Albion’s Luke Daniels, and with Curanovic looking likely to join Pompey in time for the pre-season trip to Gibraltar, sealing Daniels’ signature as well would provide some vital competition for the number one spot!
